A survey on the anti-<i>Trichomonas vaginalis</i> effect of the hydroalcoholic extract of various medicinal plants in <i>vitro</i>

Background and aims: Trichomoniasis is the most common non-viral sexually transmitted infection worldwide; although it treated by a 5-nitroimidazole drug family such as metronidazole (MTZ) with numerous side effects, in this regard, alternative new drugs are required. Therefore, study examined anti-Trichomoniasis effect of hydroalcoholic extract some traditional medicinal plants Iran vitro. Methods: In experimental study, extracts were prepared maceration at stock concentration 20 mg/mL saline solution then used for vitro anti-trichomonas experiments. Trichomonas vaginalis trophozoites isolated from patient cultured Trypticase Yeast Iron-Serum-33 medium. addition, 200 μL culture medium containing 5×104 was diluted plate wells, 10 doses separately added on each serially between 0.12 16 triplicate. The plates incubated 48 hours 37 ° C 5% CO2 . number counted hemocytometer Trypan blue staining. Finally, half maximal inhibitory (IC50) calculated probit analysis. Results: Among tested plants, Eugenia caryophyllata, Camellia sinensis, Terminalia chebula Retz showed best anti-trichomonal activity IC50 values 1.21, 1.62, 1.66 mg/mL, respectively. All had more than MTZ (IC50 100 mg/mL), an antiprotozoal positive control. Conclusion: According to results E. caryophylata, C. sinensis T. affected growth vaginalis. Thus, recommended that other studies use plant treatment trichomoniasis infection.
